Positive Pressure

I was back home helping my mother move out of the home where she had spent the last twenty-seven years of her life...the home where I spent my most formative years. Packing, sorting and organizing needed to get done but something in the garage beckoned. A shelf full of twelve-year-old boxes (that should have only been sealed for two) begged me to let them breathe. But there was too much to do in such a short amount of time. There was no room for flipping through memory lane. Still...I caved.

I couldn't help it. I pulled out my knife and sliced through the tape. Cardboard fibers floated into the air revealing a box full of my youth in the form of vinyl records. At the front of the stack was 7Seconds' twelve-inch EP "Walk Together Rock Together", purple cover variant, released jointly on BYO Records and Positive Force Records. Positive Force was the band's own short-lived imprint...the name chosen as a representation of their values and work ethic.

I had always loved the name Positive Force. It seemed to recall a desirable balance of values and work ethic mixed into the ideal pie chart of my own nature vs. nurture makeup. So, in trying to come up with a moniker for my studio, I decided to claim it for my own. Not wanting to be confused with the D.C.-based activists (who took the name for their grassroots efforts to empower local youth and seek radical change through their city's music scene), I molded the name, replacing "force" with something prevalent in both printmaking and woodworking.

And so we have Positive Pressure. Welcome! Please bookmark this page and follow along while we explore the intricacies of printmaking and fabrication. There will be explanations of processes and updates on new work coming out of the studios.

Thank you for being here. - JG
