A tale of transformation of culture and landscape through the lens of one of the most famous beaches in Hawai'i. Prior to the early 1900s, the jump rock (Pōhaku Lele) was surrounded by sand to the point where it was only about six feet tall. Much of the sand from this beach was hauled to Waikiki to build up the beaches as part of the American transformation of the Hawaiian Kingdom into a tourist and military economy. The upper portion of the print shows a survey view of the land before the sand was removed. The bottom shows a view of what the beach looks like now.
